SLUG Contributor Limelight

Contributor Limelight: David Newkirk
I spy with my little eye a SLUG photographer whose name appears on nearly every other page in October’s issue of SLUG. We’ve kept David Newkirk busy shooting portraits of Sister Dottie Dixion, various studio engineers, ad images and everything in between. Newkirk started toying with photography right after high school, but only recently became serious about it over the last two years. SLUG snagged him approximately nine months ago and assigned him his first SLUG cover shoot last May. We dug it so much we let him shoot October, too. When SLUG Mag isn’t consuming Newkirk’s free time with last-minute assignments, he can be found skiing, biking, drinking excessive amounts of coffee or running his own business making custom concrete countertops and furniture.

Alternatively Wired: A 10-Year Anniversary Celebration of Area 51
Alan Moss isn’t typical, and his club, Area 51, isn’t run-of-the-mill either. It is somewhat surprising to learn that Area 51 is celebrating its 10th anniversary. Area 51 has stuck to alternative and ’80s music and has been there to rescue goth/industrial patrons when they found themselves marooned without a venue. … read more
I Can’t Always be an Asshole: I Fell in Love...
Because of my unhealthy obsession with spicy food and being married to a vegetarian, Indian food has long been a staple in restaurant choices for me. I long ago found favorite dishes and favorite spots, so when a friend of mine told me he had a new favorite Indian place, my curiosity was piqued and I decided to stray from my usual routine and give the place a try. … read more

The Princess and the Pro
People constantly ask me how I keep my lithe stature and showgirl calfs. My answer is as simple as my regimen: a mix of bicycling with light jazz-handing on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I’m an avid cyclist 365 days. Like, haven’t-owned-a-car-in-15 years, rode-my-bike-across-Europe-twice kind of enthusiast. … read more

October’s Localized features two bands that take on characters and personas on a regular basis. Irony Man channel the sound and members of early 70s-era Black Sabbath. Dot Your I’s, Cross Your Ties
It’s really not surprising that Sister Dottie S. Dixon’s persona outgrew her three minute weekly segments on KRCL. She needed her own stage show—One that could deliver a more positive message than say… Brokeback Mountain, which in the end shows if you’re gay, you’re going to get fag-bashed and live in a trailer for the rest of your life. … read more

Princess Kennedy: Sober Sister Part 1 – January 2010
One thing you’ll quickly learn about the Princess Kennedy is that I wear my life on my Dolman sleeve. Since I’m so honest, it really gets my tucker bunched when judgmental people come in and twist others and my business into completely untrue stories. I feel it necessary to pass on a tale of one friend’s fight for sobriety, to share just a little of what someone might go through in a struggle to simply stay alive. … read more
Precision Builds with Pangea Speed
“I have this bad habit of never being satisfied. I’ll always look at a project and think that I can do it better.” Andy Carter is a perfectionist. When you consider that he is the owner of his own custom motorcycle and parts company, Pangea Speed, and one of the major organizers behind the second annual Salt Flat Social, this quality, which he refers to as either an “evolution or a sickness—depending on the day,” is exactly what you’d hope to find. … read more
