Craft Lake City 2010
SLUG’s 2nd annual Craft Lake City took place at the Gallivan Center on August 14th, 2010. With over 100 artists on hand, the event filled both the upper and lower sections of the Gallivan Center. Live music from locally loved bands and djs such as The Red Bennies, Spell Talk, and Muscle Hawk kept the crowd entertained if they needed a break from browsing, while local b-boy and hip hop dance crews took the spotlight when the main stage was being set up for the next performance.
The attendees were procuring goods that included prints, jewelry, hand made clothing and accessories, longboards, and vintage photo equipment. The quality and thought put into the products was visible both when examing items and when discussing them with their sellers. The range of creativity and interest that was displayed at Craft Lake City gave attendees the opportunity to find anything and everything that could be of interest to those who prefer hand-made to overproduced.
Craft Lake City provides an outlet for artists and goods-makers to get their names out to the masses while also providing a physical link between these artists and the customer. Both the artists and the SLC community showed that there is a growing population whom prefer this physical conection rather than the distinctly lacking connection of big brands and small thought. Well done SLC. … read more

KRCL Hidden Hollow Concert Series – 8/6/10
On a rainy and cooler than usual Friday night at Hidden Hollow, Desert Noises and A.M. Bump put on two great performances sponsored by KRCL and Utah Open Lands. Desert Noises hail from Happy Valley, otherwise known as the Provo/Orem area just south of Salt Lake City. The three member group, which is made up of Kyle Henderson, Tyler Osmond, and Trever Henderson takes their inspiration from all that daily life has to offer. Desert Noises provides their listeners with emotional, enjoyable music that seems to easily relate to whatever is captivating the audience’s mind. The performance showcased Desert Noises thoughtful songwriting and their musical capabilties with songs varying from slow, provoking listens to uptempo rock. Desert Noises plays frequently throughout the Salt Lake and Provo/Orem areas, so if you’re looking for some good local music, check them out.
A.M. Bump is a Salt Lake City soul jazz trio that plays covers of classic 60’s and 70’s soul jazz along with more modern renditions of popular artists such as the Greyboy All-Stars and one of my favorites, Medeski, Martin, and Wood. Consisting of Marty Lyman on guitar, Chris Snarr on percussion, and Jeremy Abernathy on a classic organ, A.M. Bump kept the crowd thoroughly entertained, even as the skies began to darken and the rain was fading in and out. If you have some time on Friday, August 20th, make sure to come check out the next redndition of KRCL and Utah Open Land’s Hidden Hollow Concert Series.

Brick & Mortar Shop Opening
Salt Lake’s variety of weather change is pretty vast, like snow in April, or rain in July, it makes skateboarding a little harder to do constantly. Brick and Mortar Skate Shop opened its doors on Saturday July 31st in a space located on 200 S 561 W, next to In The Venue and across the Old Town Trax stop. Hondo, the twenty three year old store owner, stumbled on some cash and decided to invest it while he could. His idea was that it was hard to find a shop solely dedicated to skateboarding, to be set apart from the snowboard/skateboard hybrid stores. The shop has an awesome selection of decks, a great location, cheap rent, a couch and open space inside to relax. Did i mention a HUGE open flatground area in the back? Currently occupied by a tanning bed, Hondo has plans to have a mini ramp in there by winter so he can keep the shop thriving through the stagnant winter season. Oh and the flatground area isn’t just choppy concrete, its slick and pretty, enough to land those sketchy 360’s on. Check out the shop if you need clothing, skate shit or ..friendship. … read more
KRCL Hidden Hollow Concert Series 7/23/10
On Friday night as the sun began to set, KRCL and Utah Open Lands presented Salt Lake City with the latest version of the Hidden Hollow Concert Series. Taking the stage first was John Henry with their take on some awesome jazz music. As the crowd grew, John Henry made sure to keep those already in attendance and those just arriving well entertained. With great timing and long solos, each member was able to showcase their talent. After an impressive hour long performance by John Henry, Jinga Boa took the stage to showcase their version of different types of Brazilian music. By this time, the crowd had gathered and the energy had picked up. People of all ages made the atmosphere very easygoing, while still allowing those who wanted to move a great opportunity right up front. If you’re looking to escape for a couple hours, I highly recommend the Hidden Hollow Concert Series. There’s no better way to start a Friday night than with live music and good people!

Infected by Vile Blue Shades
The Vile Blue Shades have been one of the greatest bands to ever come out of SLC but they have come to an unfortunate end. Monday July 5th at the Urban Lounge was their final show. The lights came on and the show exploded with energy everyone was infected with the toxic sounds of the Vile Blue Shades blaring from the speakers. We lost our minds and slashed around like wild animals until the last cord was struck. Fare well Vile Blue you will be missed. … read more
Black Chandelier Fashion Show
Salt Lake’s most beloved clothing label is back in action. Designer Jared Gold’s brainchild, Black Chandelier, is being brought back to life by his protege Rachel Domingo. After a far too long hiatus, the Black Chandelier will once again rule the Salt Lake fashion scene. To celebrate, Domingo teamed up with five other designers—including SLC heavy-hitters Jordan Halveron and Sophie St. Claire—to put on the fashion show of the year. Photos by Katie Panzer

Manny Mania 2010
In our current age of “flippy360-to-switch-manny-revert-shuv-180-flipout” skate style, Red Bull has hosted Manny Mania contest series which has been going on annually since 2007. The contest was held outside the Energy Solutions Arena, the event was totally free to the public, even hobos, and open for any skater over fourteen to enter the comp. So with the Red Bull blondies handing out drinks and the pre pubescent kids getting boners, the competition was soon underway. The heats consisted of 7 minute rounds of four skaters, about 24 skaters overall. Judges consisted of a handful of pro snowboarders from the Spice Boys and other teams. Danny Souk was the underdog at the beginning of the contest. He ended up winning first place at the end, striking the nail into the first place coffin with a frontside 180 nosemanual fakie 360 flip out. Kevin Fedderson busted out mind bending tricks that got him into second place, but he lacked the diversity of trying new inventive lines that the judges were looking for. … read more
