Cupcake Social Code with Frosty Darling
Cupcakes, kids and cuteness—the holy trinity of a good time is happening once again at Frosty Darling on Friday, July 29, for their fifth annual Frosty Darling Cupcake Social (177 East Broadway). This event will provide everything you’ve had in years past at the super-cute boutique, like the cupcake walk and cupcake decorating, but owner Gentry Blackburn is giving the format a shot in the arm with a new coloring book challenge and live music from Heber’s Holy Water Buffalo. … read more
Put on Your Birthday Suit: Fresh Turns Two
Operated by the lovely sibling duo of Helen Wade-Joice and Ian Wade, Fresh calls the bustling 9th & 9th district home and offers Salt Lake’s young men and women an affordable, local alternative to the corporate cookie-cutter clothes you find at the *gag* mall. Fresh has survived in this cutthroat economic state to see two years worth of clothing walk in and off their racks due to the owners’ dedication and insight. … read more
Leaving Las Vegas
I’ve heard it said that in times of recession, two industries thrive: alcohol and prostitution. Las Vegas is undoubtedly familiar with both these industries, but something else is thriving out there in the desert wasteland: skateboarding. The city is teeming with empty foreclosed pools and new, never-occupied construction left over from the boom that led up to the current economic state. … read more

Precision Builds with Pangea Speed
“I have this bad habit of never being satisfied. I’ll always look at a project and think that I can do it better.” Andy Carter is a perfectionist. When you consider that he is the owner of his own custom motorcycle and parts company, Pangea Speed, and one of the major organizers behind the second annual Salt Flat Social, this quality, which he refers to as either an “evolution or a sickness—depending on the day,” is exactly what you’d hope to find. … read more
Skate4Homies
June 21st saw National Go Skateboarding Day go off with a bang. Not only did over 200 skaters mob through the SLC streets, but multiple locales also hosted events to show the city why skateboarding means so much. Skate4Homies hosted their own event that drew “kids” of all ages. Music was put on by various local bands such as The Spins, Darks Seas, and Max Pain and the Groovies along with product giveaways and the premier of Transworld’s “Not Another Transworld Video.” … read more
Crucial Fest @ Liberty Park
This last Saturday, June 18, marked the fourth day of Crucial Fest. An afternoon filled with music, food, arts, crafts, the usual colorful Salt Lake festival attendees and plenty of sunshine. I started the event off with a teriyaki beef bowl from the Cruzin Sushi cart, one of Salt Lake’s growing number of roaming food trucks, and then moved around the parameter of the event catching acts such as Never Eat Neon, Accident on the North Stage and The Hip White People. The music was flowin’, the people were jive-in’ and the Live Action Role Players were out in force, just to keep things interesting.

SAGA store-front grand opening.
Saturday, June 11 marked the grand opening of the Saga Supply Co. storefront and newly renovated offices. Designer Jordan Harper gave me a quick tour of the newly remodeled space. A large storefront area was added where customers can come Friday- Sunday to look at the brands newest and coolest products or just hang out and play some video games. This room connected with office area, freshly redone with walls made of recycled shipping pallets. From there you can wander back into the “fun” room, outfitted with mini ramp, ping pong table, old fashioned arcade games and even a “claw game”. Head on down to 2904 S. West Temple here in Salt Lake any weekend to check out the new space and maybe grab a cool new sweatshirt, Tee or pair of fresh swim trunks for this summer!

Farmers Market at Pioneer Park
Saturday June 11th marked the first Farmers Market of the summer here in Salt Lake, held at Pioneer Park. The theme of farmers market is one of food, local produce, music, friends and more food. I sampled some delicious Thai pineapple curry, Caribbean jerk chicken kabobs, wood-fire cooked pizza, carne asada tacos and, of course, some strawberry lemonade. If you are looking for some feel-goodery in the sun on any Saturday for the rest of the summer, the farmers market is the place to go.
