Review: Thee Oh Sees – Drop

Here’s to the Thee Oh Sees: one of the most consistent bands in the psychedelic rock scene. Drop, their eighth LP in the last six years, is a logical step in their evolution from a psych-folk band to a band that mixes acid-psychedelia with pop harmonies at a breakneck speed—which isn’t to say they can’t take their listeners on a mellow trip as well. “Lens,” the most memorable track on the album for me, has a sleepy nature à la “I’m So Tired” by The Beatles. It features the deep sounding notes of a cello, and frontman John Dwyer’s hushed singing. It’s an excellent play on the classic baroque-pop sound of the late ’60s. Compare the temperance of “Lens” to the caustic-rock of Drop’s opening track “Penetrating Eye,” and you’ll hear the unique dynamic this band exhibits on every album. – Justin Gallegos
