Seoul = Washed Out + Made in Heights

There is something effortlessly breezy about I Become a Shade. Seoul has a lightweight, synth-pop sound that is easy to listen to, and they explore the pop side of chillwave, reminding me instantly of Washed Out, though without the hip-hop influences. The standalone track of the album is definitely “White Morning,” which breaks from the convention of a straight rock beat and layers dreamy, soft vocals with clear instrumental loops. My only complaint about the album is that there are too many transitory instrumental tracks, but even those pieces are well-mixed and perfect in their simplicity. –Ali Shimkus
