Orchestra Of Spheres = Pere Ubu + Uku Kuut / Black Moth Super Rainbow
Leave it to Fire Records to provide us with a record as non-traditional as this one. Orchestra Of Spheres is a band that makes music equal parts funk and psychedelic. It’s like Earth, Wind & Fire on acid and then some. The music certainly seems to contradict itself—adding in western guitar licks and more on top of everything else—but the fusion of so many genres is intentional. This makes for a difficult listen, though, because it’s just as annoying as it is intriguing. It’s clear by the title of the album that not even Orchestra Of Spheres know quite what to make of it. If you think that the electro-punk (another fitting definition for OOS) of LCD Soundsystem is too tame of a classification, then maybe this band is for you. –Justin Gallegos
