Ntjam Rosie = Sherry Dyanne / Finn Silver
There’s a refreshing world sound to the coffeehouse acoustic style of The One. Additional instruments, like jazz piano, add a sophisticated feel to a genre that traditionally feels down tempo. Rosie is considered an Afro-European artist, and her sound palate includes everything from Minnie Ripperton–esque vocals to space-jazz compositions. Each of those styles can be heard in full on “You Build Me Up,” which is a track that also solidifies critics’ comparisons of Rosie’s vocals to Beyonce’s. This isn’t the kind of album I’d play on the regular, but if I heard an aunt or uncle listening to it, I’d be thoroughly impressed with their taste. The One offers a mature sound for listeners who care to feel like they’re listening to mature music. –Justin Gallegos
