Drivin’ N Cryin’ = Electric Prunes + The Kinks
Typically, if you were a fan of early fundamentalist punk bands (e.g. The Ramones, The Stooges) then at one time or another you would’ve at least heard of Drivin’ N Cryin’ as a relative recommendation. Two decades later, the band has turned their coats from hard-driven bass lines and power chords to pop harmonies and electric sitars. Seriously. In Songs From The Psychedelic Time Clock, the band flies its newborn psych rock flag via a flood of fuzz guitars, jangly rhythms and a spacey ambiance. Beyond this psych metamorphosis, frontman Kevin Kinney’s microeconomic view on album releases goes against the grain. Kinney doesn’t trust our era of easily bored listeners to last through a whole album, so he’s opting to dissect a single album into four EPs and release them all within a year. He may be right; sometimes potato chips are better than just a whole potato. –Gregory Gerulat
