Azealia Banks = Missy Elliott + Angel Haze
Ahhhhh, finally, she’s back—insert prayer hand emoji. After a three-year hiatus, the Harlem-native rapper was finally able to release her debut album, and it’s on fire. Banks delivers an album full of old and new material that elaborates on the music she gave us in Fantasea and 1991 while rapping flawlessly in both English and Spanish. “Luxury” weaves between singing and rapping beautifully and in a way few other female rappers have been able to achieve. Meanwhile “Heavy Metal and Reflective” gives us a taste of the unforgivingly fabulous Miss Bank$ we saw back in the “212” days. “I’m in every city, they say hello to that head bitch” she casually raps while an unfamiliar, uncredited and innocent female voice in the background says, “That was the loveliest thing I’ve ever heard.” Each track on the album is worth being called a highlight, however my most played are “Idle Delilah,” “Soda,” “Miss Camaraderie,” and “Desperado.” –Julia Sachs
