Chamber Music Society of Salt Lake & Nova Concert Series End of Season Performances

Chamber Music Society of Salt Lake & Nova Concert Series...
By

This year I have taken in two of the better, if more obscure, musical seasons presented by local arts organizations: the Nova Chamber Music Series, drawing largely from the luminous musicians of the Utah Symphony as well as other mostly local talent, and the Salt Lake Chamber Society’s season of touring Chamber Music ensembles. … read more

Trial, Powerwolves, Cool Your Jets, Despite Despair and No Empire @ Foursquare Church 04.27

Trial, Powerwolves, Cool Your Jets, Despite Despair and No Empire...

Finally, with anticipation mounting, Trial began setting up. The crowd filed back in early, leaving an ominous empty space in the middle of the room for the inevitable mosh pit … The band took a couple minutes to sound-check, and then immediately blasted into “Reflection,” quickly finding out that microphones were totally unnecessary. The crowd shouted every single word, some guys climbing up onto the stage and holding singer Greg Bennick by the shoulders, screaming into his face before jumping down. The energy spread throughout the room, even affecting those of us opting to stay on the backside of the ever-expanding mosh pit. Bennick noted at one point that, “Salt Lake City is the only place you see people actually stretching during the fast parts, getting ready for the breakdown.” … read more

Rotting Out, Focused Minds, Speak Out and Fever Dreams @ Mojos 05.02

Rotting Out, Focused Minds, Speak Out and Fever Dreams @...
By

Truth be told, Focused Minds is what got me here. Midwest wolfpack. A split with Another Mistake. Serious Youth Crew, straight edge-bent. Color me “into it” and finger-point in my face. Last time they played here was at an acoustically wretched skatepark with a bunch of x-tian metalcore knuckledraggers. They didn’t complain. … read more

Bombing On The Banked Track: Salt City Makes Their Debut 05.05

Bombing On The Banked Track: Salt City Makes Their Debut...
By

When the Salt City Derby Girls announced last year that they would be making the transition to the banked track, I’ll admit that I had my doubts. After all, SCDG began as a flat track league in 2005. It’s likely that most of the league had never even set skate on a banked track before. Rumors started flying, but Salt City kept quiet. Finally, the track made its debut on May 5, to a home team beatdown between the Death Dealers and the Bomber Babes. … read more

Samba Fogo presents: Pegando Fogo 05.03 @ Rose Wagner

Samba Fogo presents: Pegando Fogo 05.03 @ Rose Wagner
By

Pegando Fogo, a Portuguese phrase that means “catching fire,” offered a scintillating fusion of capoeira (an afro-brazilian martial art), fire dancing, carnival samba and Brazilian Orixa dance accompanied by Brazilian and Afro-Brazilian music. All of these genres, presented by the local Samba Fogo Music and Dance Company, were brilliantly assembled on a stage lit with dramatic colors, often reminiscent of the changing sky. … read more

All Systems Fail, Gnawing Suspicion @ Earth Jam at Liberty Park, Fire Stage 04.28

All Systems Fail, Gnawing Suspicion @ Earth Jam at Liberty...
By

As surreal as it was to watch All Systems Fail shred in the park on a sunny day, in the midst Earth Jam, a pro-environment and pro-paisley festival, I could still pound my foot against the grass and get into the pure political spite of those years long past. All Systems Fail takes all the best things from the DIY ethic … With short, fast songs, it’s easy to bob your head along with the beat, take a swig of ginger ale, and keep on bobbing. … read more

Deer Tick @ Urban Lounge 05.10

Deer Tick @ Urban Lounge 05.10
By

The intense, raspy voice of Deer Tick’s John McCauley is a good analogy for Thursday night’s show at the Urban Lounge. At times, it’s a bit rough and you wonder how long before his vocal chords finally give out and the shit hits the fan. But, for the most part, it never did. Even though McCauley seemed a little unhappy with his guitar at times, calling it an asshole at one point, Deer Tick delivered a memorable set in all its ragged glory. … read more

Brian Jonestown Massacre @ Urban Lounge 05.09

Brian Jonestown Massacre @ Urban Lounge 05.09
By

Brian Jonestown Massacre takes the stage. All nine, ten or eleven of them. It’s loud. Heavenly, but loud nonetheless. Three guitarists are bound to make them ears ring. Somehow, it’s hard to make sense of everything happening on the stage. Gill-stuffed with musicians, slumped, draped and/or crouched over their instruments with varying levels of concentration etched into their faces—it’s like some otherwordly ritual we’re interrupting. … read more
