Photowalking Utah: 5th Annual Studio Lighting Photowalk 02.25
By

After a good deal of “will she/won’t she” deliberation on my part, I headed down to Draper on a Saturday morning for Photowalking Utah’s 5th Annual Studio Lighting event. About 175 photographers crowded into the Gateway Community Church, along with 11 models, a makeup artist and 10 different studio lighting sets. … read more

“Stare at the ceiling and think” kinda music. I don’t smoke weed or eat mushrooms, so that’s what Tycho does for me––provides a nice soundtrack to dive deep into my brain and untangle the kinks. … read more

The Faure Piano Quartet are superstars in Germany and England, having won awards for recordings of both classical and pop music. Despite having covered bands like N.E.R.D. and Feist, Elliott Smith, System of A Down, Pet Shop Boys and Steely Dan, among others, when they play classical music, you would think they had never played anything else. … read more

You would have never guessed that Utah had been hit with a winter storm based on the outfits the majority of the crowd at Great Saltair rocked last Friday night for Bassnectar—the necessary articles of clothing seemed to be bikinis, LED gloves and furry boots. … read more

I’m always in complete awe of how much sound comes out of this duo. It’s all thanks to the crazy pedal work Nicole Barille does while singing and wailing on her guitar, looping both vocals and chords to create this crazy layered sound while Sam Meister pounds on that bass drum in his bare feet like an animal.  … read more

The Spider House instantly blew me away—it’s an all ages venue, equipped with multiple bars, four different stages (three of which were outdoors) and on Thursday one of their many patios was lined with vintage clothing dealers. The interior of the place is just as rad. Considering that I was there for the free Austin Psych Fest showcase made the experience even more mind blowing. … read more

Night Beats @ Bar Deluxe 03.06

On Tuesday evening, I pedaled my ass through a massive snowstorm towards Bar Deluxe to check out the Night Beats. By the time I got to the bar (a mere four blocks east of my house), I was cold and wet and I’d watched my boyfriend almost eat shit on his bike. Before I made it home that night, I was colder and had slid out on my bike and managed to smash both my knees and my chin against some ice. Thank god I didn’t break the record that I’d purchased—if that had happened, my tears probably would have lasted much longer. Fear that you’ve just lost your teeth to an icy sidewalk is scary, but destroying an awesome record, now, that would be devastating. … read more

I stumbled into the Hype Hotel looking for a way to kill some time on Thursday afternoon. I didn’t know who was playing, but figured that entry to the Hype Hotel would likely come with a few free cocktails. I quickly realized that I was in for a pretty awesome SXSW surprise: Lee Fields and the Expressions and Bass Drum of Death were both scheduled to play.  … read more
