Overview: SLUG Magazine Social Media Internships provide prospective digital marketers and journalists with professional experience. From learning the nuts and bolts of social media algorithms to creative brainstorming and video production, SLUG Magazine offers Social Media Interns the opportunity to be part of an independent publication with roots in Utah’s music, arts, events and community subcultures. SLUG Magazine fosters a highly skilled, creative, energized and empowered team. This is a volunteer internship position.
Reports to: Executive Editor, Events Coordinator, Junior Editor
Commitment: One year, 10 hours/week
Key Responsibilities:
- Drafting and scheduling social media posts
- Applying style guidelines for online content
- Adding local events to SLUG’s online Daily Calendar
- Brainstorming social media-related projects
- Assisting with pitching, editing and posting video content shot with camera phone
- Analyzing social media performance and engagement metrics
- Collaborating with the marketing and design teams for digital campaigns
- Supporting live event coverage via social media platforms
- Assisting with miscellaneous tasks related to marketing, events and social media
Qualifications:
- SLUG Magazine reader
- Strong understanding of major social media platforms (Instagram, Facebook, X/Twitter, TikTok, LinkedIn, Reddit)
- Excellent written communication skills and attention to detail
- Basic knowledge of social media scheduling tools
- Ability to apply and follow style guidelines for consistent branding
- Creative mindset with the ability to generate engaging content ideas
- Interest in Utah’s local music, arts, and event scenes
- Ability to multitask and manage deadlines
- Basic understanding of social media metrics and analytics
- Ability to collaborate and work effectively in a team environment
- Willingness to learn and adapt in a fast-paced setting
Preferred Skills and Experience:
- Leadership and team-building

- Ability to work and self-start with little supervision
- Quick learner and adaptable
- Excellent attention to detail
- Experience with photo/video editing software is a plus (e.g., Canva, Adobe Suite)

- Must manage and prioritize multiple responsibilities, goals, and deadlines efficiently
- Solid comprehension of grammar and writing techniques

- Maturity and ability to professionally represent SLUG Magazine, both on and off the clock
