Censored Voices recollects recordings from Israeli soldiers of the Six Days War, originally recorded by Amos Oz. This documentary reveals their true feelings—as opposed to proclamations of national pride—about the pressures of Zionism and the horrors and hypocrisy of war. Director Mor Loushy beautifully tracks their testimonies alongside footage from the war and its aftermath, and displays the speakers listening to their own voices from decades past with faces that indicate the pain of reopened wounds. From the beginning of the Six Days War to the cease fire, the soldiers admit to fear; relate their military strength and national persona to that of David before Goliath, and their subsequent surprise at the reversal of those archetypes for them upon their crushing victory; some acquiesce the likeness of their actions in militarily claiming Sinai and the whole of Jerusalem to the Holocaust as they brutalize Arab inhabitants. Censored Voices features these soldiers considering what their Arab enemies would do to them had the tables been turned, but also identifying with their supposed foes as fathers and families, which forces them to question the ideals of Zionism and patriotism as they become heroes. This documentary brings viewers incredibly close to Israeli vets’ disillusionment with war and occupying territory they’re unsure belongs to them. It’s an education about the emotional character of one of the world’s most crucial ongoing war zones. –Alexander Ortega
