Wasatch Roller Derby Season Opener
Roller Derby
Fans crossed over into the derby dimension as Wasatch Roller Derby opened the 2011 season with two newly formed home teams, the Black Diamond Divas and the Hot Wheelers. It was shaping up to be a defensive bout early on as the first few jams revealed how evenly matched the teams were.
After trading the lead back and forth, Honey Delunatic belted out a fifteen point jam for the Black Diamond Divas. Not to be outdone, the Hot Wheelers quickly answered with an equally impressive thirteen point jam by Skull Candi to tie up the game at 25-25 early in the first period. This defensive battle continued throughout the first half with excellent blocking by Medusa Damage, Smack & Deckher and the Instigator.
At half-time, Wasatch Roller Derby showcased their junior roller derby league, the Wasatch Junior Rollers. The junior girls scrimmaged and displayed plenty of sass, as well as their developing roller derby skills.
The game remained close during the second half with both teams posting high scoring jams by their jammers. In total, Ali3 Kitt3n scored 61 points and Honey Delunatic scored 60 points for the Black Diamond Divas.
Skull Candi was the Hot Wheelers top scorer picking up 36 points, while Nico Noir scored 34 and Colonel Skirts scored 29 points. Penalties played a part toward the end of the game, with the skaters accruing a combined 118 minor penalties in the bout!
In the end, the Black Diamond Divas finished on top with 128 over the Hot Wheelers 105. Wasatch Roller Derby donated 40% of the night’s proceeds to the March of Dimes.
Next up, the Wasatch Roller Derby’s Midnight Terror hosts the Pueblo Derby Devil Dollz at the Salt Palace on February 19.
