Wasatch Roller Derby Double Header

Roller Derby

During the second game of the night, we got to see two of Wasatch’s home teams facing off—the Black Diamond Divas and the Hot Wheelers.
This game is what roller derby excitement is all about. The teams were very evenly matched and the score stayed very close for the entire bout, both teams displaying great strategies, strong players and great endurance.
The Black Diamond Divas started out aggressively, coming away with the majority of the lead jammer status for a good portion of the first half. However, for the majority of the time, they were not able to capitalize on their advantage over the Hot Wheelers. The Divas were snagging up the lead jammer status but kept getting penalties, allowing the Hot Wheelers’ jammers Makillda, Stache Bot and O’Britterator* to take advantage of power jams and score sizeable points for their team.
At halftime, the score was Black Diamond Divas: 93, Hot Wheelers: 135.
The Divas came back from what must have been a great halftime pep talk, because right away they started putting up points. The Divas’ MVP jammer, Wreckless, was able to take advantage of a power jam and rack up 15 points for the team. Also coming away with big points for the Divas were Dr. Octopushy and Sookie Slaphouse.
The Black Diamond Divas’ defense was solid and organized, holding back the Hot Wheelers from scoring. A major player for the Divas’ defense was Bruiser Ego*, whose low-key but dominating style kept her team organized and on top of the Hot Wheelers’ attempts to score, bringing the game to a tied score: 176 to 176.
The tie was short-lived and the BDD’s efforts were just not enough to stop the Hot Wheelers. Solid, skillful jamming from the Hot Wheelers’ Stache Bot and O’Britterator along with the confident, powerful blocking from their MVP blocker, Teddy Rupp, ultimately brought the win to the Hot Wheelers with a score of 215 to 196.
Both games were great, making this an overall spectacular night for roller derby fans, players and volunteers.
