Desert Noises: To SXSW and Beyond
Desert Noises are a band that were born to perform. The four-piece plays folk-inspired indie rock with enough rhythm, reverb and harmony to fill vast, open spaces. While some local bands are content with an occasional show at Kilby or Velour, these guys have been traveling from one corner of the country to another, loading and unloading their mini-van for shows they booked themselves. Just look at their Tumblr and see how riddled it is with tour announcements, updates from the road and “dates added.”

Simon April 8, 1974 – Jan. 9, 2013
Simon had an enthusiasm toward life that inspired me. I looked up to her, and I always will for her ability to look beyond the obvious value of something. She appreciated the intricacies in people that make them imperfect, and make them who they are. Nobody has ever had me feeling as cool, as smart or as interesting as Simon made me feel. I was flattered to be her friend. … read more

Sundance Film Review: Prince Avalanche
Director David Gordon Green returns to his independent origins at the Sundance Film Festival after helming a handful of raunchy Hollywood comedies (Pineapple Express, Your Highness and The Sitter) and attempts to reignite a sense of grounded and heartfelt substance, but the result is a lingering nature video that neglects its actor’s potential with copious amounts of silence. … read more
365 Poetry @ Salt Lake City Photo Collective 01.05
On Saturday evening, I finally got around to experiencing the spoken word up close and personal, attending the 365 Poetry Collective hosted at the Salt Lake Photo Collective. With such hospitality, it was easy to see how so many people would feel comfortable in this environment to raise up with their voice to speak whatever one feels the desire to express. … read more
Go With the Flow: Tyson Bowerbank
Having first set foot on a skateboard at the age of 8, Tyson Bowerbank is a prime example of the up-and-coming. With a resume including Fuel TV, ESPN and a repertoire of high-profile amateur contest finals, Bowerbank has some pretty high credentials. Now, at the age of 18, Bowerbank is a solid, humble skater who just loves being on a skateboard. With a bag of tricks that most kids only have behind an Xbox controller, this baby-faced Sandy native is on a tear of a come-up and shows no signs of slowing down. … read more

R.I.P. Michael E. Cline 1967-2012
Mike E. Cline was a really smart, generous and dynamic person. He had a way of making everyone feel good around him, or trying to. He could be incredibly respectful and polite … and rowdy and fun. Like a lot of people in our scene, he loved music—but Mike was really passionate about music, which made him so much fun to go to shows with. Riding in a car, he didn’t just listen to music in the background, he played it loud and sang along! … read more
Bob Moss 1953 – 2011
Bob Moss was the greatest man I’ve ever known. At first he was just the hairy dude in a picture on my friend Brian Staker’s desk. One day, while awaiting my paycheck, I imagined him plunking off-key songs on his beat-up guitar. “That’s my friend Bob Moss,” Staker said. “He’s an artist and musician.” … read more
