“What I really find cool about synths is they find a home in a lot of genres of music. A lot of people maybe don’t think about them in that way, but they’re very versatile instruments.”

Zola Jesus: Creativity in Isolation
It’s been two years since Zola Jesus (aka Nika Roza Danilova) blessed SLC with her ethereal voice that caused us to rethink how we view the world around us. SLUG recently had the opportunity to sit down with Danilova, who returns to Urban Lounge Jan. 12, and to discuss the environment, living in isolation and her new album, Taiga.

Localized: Merchant Royal and Big Wild Wings
January’s Localized starts our new year off with the classic rock lineup of Merchant Royal and Big Wild Wings, two of our fair town’s lovely femme-fronted projects. The evening gets an extra dash of feminine mystique with Night Wings opening the night.

I Am Thor: King of Muscle Rock
Thor is bending steel bars in his teeth, still standing as a testament to the resilient spirit of rock n’ roll.

Localized: Book on Tape Worm
“This kind of started as an accident,” vocalist/guitarist Scott Shepard says. “I used to play in a lot of rock bands. Then I started writing a bunch of sad songs and didn’t really plan on playing them for anybody.” The group gained attention from local music venue Velour, and acquired cellist Ciera Black after an

Pallbearer: Foundations of Burden
“Sorrow and Extinction developed a following pretty quickly, and luckily, we had a lot of people in our corner to help push the new album,” he says. “It sort of came out of the gate pretty hot, surprisingly. None of us really expected that at all.” Despite their sudden popularity, Pallbearer try to focus on their music, not on the publicity. “It’s basically like we do with everything—try to take everything in stride, not have any expectations about what is coming next and just roll with it,” says Pallbearer bassist Joseph D. Rowland. … read more

Christmas Wish List from the Underground: A Collection of Appeals...
Remember when you were young and anxious, desperately propelling yourself up from the tile floor of a shopping mall with your toes just to glimpse the red mess of a man who, according to your sources, planned on hooking it up big time? We remember. That’s why SLUG recently sat down with a handful of members from Utah’s underground music community and asked them some irresponsibly Christian-based questions about what they want for Christmas this year. … read more

Localized: L’anarchiste
This month’s Localized features a super-sweet holiday treat! Showcasing an uncommon four-band lineup, we’ll be kicking the night off with the twangy post-rock of The Awful Truth, then progressing to the ethereal dream world of Loud Harp. After a short break, we’ll hear the quietly contemplative stylings of Book on Tape Worm and finish out the evening with the pastoral musical experimentation of L’anarchiste. … read more
