DayGlow Goes Hard in tha Muthafucking Paint @ The Great...
Walking into The Great Saltair for Dayglow was a surreal experience. Huge balloons that reminded me of coral and inflatable lit amoebas surrounded the stage, with a giant 3D clock serving as the back drop that was counting down the minutes to the first blast of paint. … read more
Neon Indian @ Urban Lounge
We walked in the cool evening taking sips from a vitamin water bottle filled with cheap wine. We killed the last few drops as we hit the door of the already packed Urban Lounge to catch the most talked about show of October. Everyone bouncing and smiling as we were swallowed up by the sea of people on the floor. The mass of bodies was moving to the crests and troughs of a wave of sound from some kind of future island in the sun. … read more
OFF!, Retox @ Club Sound
I got there just in time for Retox, a national touring band from southern California. Retox is a four-piece grindcore band that features Justin Pearson (of Struggle and the Locust fame) and Gabe Serbian (of the Locust, and also Cattle Decapitation). … read more
Electric Six, Mark Mallman @ Urban 10.01
After the openers had been swept away and the stage hosed off, the night finally got started. A surprising number of men in their mid-to-late forties suddenly swept over to the dance floor, many wearing freshly purchased “Electric Six” t-shirts from the merch table. … read more
Low, The Moth & The Flame @ Velour 09.23
Velour was packed; I’ve only seen so many people in this venue at one of Velour’s high-energy shows. I guess I shouldn’t have been so surprised at how many people were there––it was Low––but it also seemed like a lot of people were there because locals The Moth & The Flame opened the show. … read more
Skrillex’s Mothership Tour 09.24 @ Saltair
The Mothership Tour was something I had been looking forward to for months—with its amazing line up how could I not—Skrillex, 12th Planet, Nadastrom and Foreign Beggars. Unfortunately due to complications with their visas, Foreign Beggars were unable to grace Salt Lake City with their presence on Sat. Sept. 24, but even without them the show was astounding. … read more
Active Child, Chad Valley, Night Sweats @ Urban Lounge 09.20
Seeing three great bands on a Tuesday night in an intimate setting is nothing to complain about as a music fan, but each of these bands deserved a larger stage. … read more
Golden Shoulders on 09.19
Adam Kline, more commonly known by his songwriting and performing name Golden Shoulders, has been writing songs, touring incessantly and recording music with a shockingly diverse line up of players over the last decade. I was pretty excited when SLUG asked me to go to a small house show he would be performing at in the ninth and ninth neighborhood where I live. I mostly was familiar with him because one of my favorite songwriters Joanna Newsom spent some of her formative years singing and contributing keys for the band. The idea of seeing him in a less official, more intimate venue where meeting him would be easy was appealing. … read more
Heart Pharmacy @ Bar Deluxe 09.17
On Sept. 17 Ali Sarijlou’s one-man show known as Heart Pharmacy stopped at Bar Deluxe. Although Sarijlou is currently based out of San Diego, he has Salt Lake City roots and a big local following of Ali and his music. … read more
Colour Revolt, colourmusic, The Love Capades @ Kilby 09.16
I love attending shows at Kilby, and I’m always surprised when they’re under attended. This is a totally homegrown, all-ages venue near downtown with lots of national and local talent coming through all of the time. Get the fuck off your couches and go to shows at Kilby, kids! … read more
