The Flying Fin
Carston Oliver, AKA “The Flying Fin,” is a 23-year-old native of Salt Lake City. He grew up skiing from the ripe young age of five and never looked back. After two grueling years in the U of U’s engineering program, spending his days skiing and biking, going to class in the evening and then studying all night, only to repeat the process again and again, he decided to take a break from the social institution of college for a while. Now, the mountains hold his gaze. … read more

A Craftsman at Heart
Driving around Salt Lake, it’s easy to see that we have a healthy tattoo community. A copious number of shops have infested the landscape, and it can be difficult to sort out quality from the tremendous quantity. Heart of Gold Tattoo has that quality in spades. Owner Jon McAffee, a 10-year veteran of the Salt Lake tattoo terrain, has worked in shops like Apparition Ink and Oni, and recently entered a new stage of his career last September when he opened Heart of Gold Tattoo. … read more
Its All Mathematics: Learning Trickonometry with Cody Weber
There was a time when skate shop videos were as abundant as porn stars at Charlie Sheen’s house. Now it seems that due to the recession, many shops are struggling to pay their utility bills, let alone give some young buck any sort of budget for a film. With a fresh start and a new team, Technique will be dropping “Trickonometry” on Utah like a baby grand piano. … read more

O-Town Derby Dames: 25th St. Brawlers vs. Uinta Madness
At a neighborhood recreation center the ladies of O Town’s 25th Street Brawlers and the men of Uinta Madness skated against each other. Uinta Madness controlled the bout from the very beginning. The difference in size and strength of the teams was apparent and I found myself screaming in support of the women’s team by the end of the bout. … read more

Zane Lamprey Interview
I was excited to talk to Zane Lamprey. Not in that cliched, every interviewer has to love the interviewed, type of way. I’m a bit of a drunk. I appreciate drunks that can hold it together and function in society. As sad as it sounds, I appreciate high functioning addicts. They need what they need, and they still get done what needs to get done. Zane Lamprey is a man that hosts two different drinking shows. … read more

Midnight Terror vs. Jailhouse Jawbreakers 02.19
Midnight Terror of the Wasatch Roller Derby League squashed the Jailhouse Jawbreakers, an out of town team from Pueblo, Colorado last Saturday. It was obvious from the beginning of the bout that the teams were of different calibers. Midnight Terror’s strategy seemed to be pretty simple: score some points, call the jam. … read more

Matthew Ivan Bennett and Mesa Verde
On February 24, Plan-B, in its permanent home at the beautiful Rose Wagner Theater, will present the world premier of MESA VERDE, a new play by Matthew Ivan Bennett. Disney on Ice this was not. In fact, it was probably the most unique subject matter I’ve seen explored on stage—and a well-acted, emotional powerhouse to boot. Such is Plan-B’s legacy. … read more

Viva La Pow Mow!
Last week’s delivery of fresh ‘Wasatch Gold’ was well received by many, and the heinous crowds in the Cottonwoods proved it. However, while the general population of powder-starved locals waited in the line at the base of the canyon, my friends and I enjoyed an absolutely splendid day at Powder Mountain. Less than an hour drive from SLC, this little gem offers up some 7,000 acres of pure shred-able entertainment, without the egocentric masses that inhabit the slopes closer to town. … read more

Wasatch Roller Derby Season Opener
Fans crossed over into the derby dimension as Wasatch Roller Derby opened the 2011 season with two newly formed home teams, the Black Diamond Divas and the Hot Wheelers. It was shaping up to be a defensive bout early on as the first few jams revealed how evenly matched the teams were. … read more
