Not Just Your Grandma’s Attic: A Closer Look at the...
The first time I visited the Daughters of Utah Pioneers’ (DUP) Pioneer Memorial Museum (PMM), despite being heavily medicated and unable to articulate thoughts coherently, I left the museum in awe. I’d never seen anything like it. As a history nerd and a historical kitsch connoisseur, I knew I needed to work there. With the help of my adoptive grandma, I signed up to be a docent, and for the time I spent in Utah, I was a faithful volunteer for eight months. … read more
Gallery Stroll: An Ode to Kayo Gallery
When I found out the Kayo Gallery would be closing on July 13, all other Gallery Stroll activities ceased to interest me. Over the last nine years, I’ve followed the struggles and triumphs of this little gallery, which launched several careers, showcased international artists and anchored the Broadway Gallery Stroll scene. … read more
Creature Feature: Femmale Fatale, An Interview with Sophia Scott
Amid a group of performers whose goal is stylized femininity, Sophia Scott took to the stage in a suit, which he took off during the performance to reveal a gorgeous black dress, all while singing, rather than syncing. Samba Fogo @ The Rose Wagner 04.18
I’ve made it my ongoing quest to expose my children to as many arts and cultural related events as humanly possible without breaking the budget. That, along with the fact that the mere words Samba Fogo gets my hips undulating and booty popping meant that I couldn’t miss “Espirito De Fofo” (Spirit of Fire) at the Rose Wagner Performing Art Center. … read more

Sample Tracks @ Sugar Space 04.05
Sugar Space is tucked away on 616 Wilmington Ave. in Sugarhouse, which provides for a sense of stealing away to a small mountain town, and lends her performances an intimate tone. Leah Nelson Del Porto and Cortney McGuire of fivefour kicked off the showcase with their piece, “my space is sometimes yours.” An older piece in their repertoire, “my space is sometimes yours” is honed and polished. The program previewed that the piece was devoid of musical accompaniment, which turned out to be an excellent choice, as the under-the-breath mutterings between Nelson and McGuire proved to be not only entertaining, but underpinned the conceptual content of the piece, which was negotiating space with another person and the shifting boundaries. … read more
