SLUG Magazine is looking for a new, part-time employee to join our team immediately! SLUG Magazine fosters a highly skilled, creative, energized and empowered workforce. Overview: The Soundwaves Producer is in charge of producing the SLUG Soundwaves podcast, which publishes every two weeks. Soundwaves is SLUG’s local music podcast in which Utah musicians tell stories related to their art, whether that be about their music production, creative process, tour stories or experiences that have informed their work. Soundwaves guests delve into what makes their music important to them. The Soundwaves Producer is responsible for coordinating and conducting recorded interviews (with some minimal supervision from the SLUG editorial team) using their own recording and editing equipment and software. The producer is expected to deliver high-quality, narrative-driven podcast episodes, ready to upload, to the SLUG editorial team every two weeks. 

Reports to: Executive Editor, Junior Editor, Assistant Editor

Responsibilities:

  • Actively research and pitch the SLUG editorial team on local musicians to feature
  • Contact local musicians to pitch and arrange interviews 
  • Conduct pre-interview phone calls with interviewees to coordinate and plan for recorded interviews
  • Compose outlines to send to interviewees prior to recorded interview 
  • Conduct recorded interviews with local musicians 
  • Shape audio narratives with editing
  • Edit, mix and master interview audio to create clean interview recordings suitable for publishing
  • Edit, mix and master music for inclusion in Soundwaves episodes
  • Edit and mix music and interview audio to create Soundwaves episodes 
  • Receive and incorporate feedback from SLUG editorial team 
  • Store digital Soundwaves materials for archival 
  • Record ads when necessary

Qualifications:

  • SLUG Magazine reader
  • SLUG Soundwaves listener 
  • Strong sense of storytelling and narrative pacing
  • Own audio/recording equipment and editing software comparable to or including Pro Tools, Logic, Cubase
  • Audio-editing experience; podcast creation preferred
  • Strong understanding of magazine principles and SLUG Magazine’s brand
  • Passion for Utah’s local scene and elevating Utah’s creative culture
  • Keen knowledge of various genres of underground/youth music
  • Maintain SLUG Magazine’s core values of quality and transparency
  • Working knowledge of Audacity and/or Adobe Audition a plus
  • Must be available to work odd hours in order to facilitate interviews
  • Familiarity with songwriting/music composition preferred
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
