Tom at the Farm, Xavier Dolan’s fourth feature (preceding this year’s Mommy), retains the striking visual storytelling and smart dialogue of his other films, yet takes them into a different realm altogether—that of the psychological thriller. Tom (Xavier Dolan) visits the isolated family farm of his recently deceased lover, Guillaume (Guy), where he’s introduced to Guy’s mother Agathe (Lise Roy) and his brawny, volatile brother, Francis (Pierre-Yves Cardinal).
Grieving and depressed, Tom is forced by Francis to satisfy the family’s fantasy that Guillaume was heterosexual. After becoming closer to Francis, Tom remains at the farm, soon disbelieving all signs that Francis is harboring a terrible history himself. Bleak and desolate, the film is a stunning work of visual narrative and cinematography.
