Onza Winston is the operations manager for Discrete Clothing , an outdoor clothing company based in Salt Lake City. He is also a veteran of the Marine Corps, and was deployed twice to Iraq. He produces music, and recently released an album under the name Onza Davichi .
Special thanks to Addictive Behavior Motor Works , who hosted this month’s SLUG Style in their gigantic shop space.
Every month, SLUG Style features a distinct and unique member of the community and asks them why they do what they do. Exploring more than just clothing, SLUG Style is an attempt to feature the people who give Salt Lake City flavor through personality and panache.

“I come from a pretty stylish family,” says Onza Winston. “I mean, I’m from Chicago, which is a pretty progressive city for fashion. All the big brands are pretty much there, so walking down Michigan Avenue back in the day, I dunno, made it interest me.” Photo: @clancycoop
“I dunno, the street fashion industry is pretty big now, but back in the day I was matching cool colors with skate wear and street wear. I was just matching it all,” says Onza Winston. “I used to work for Abercrombie & Fitch, and I even fused that with it as well. I just kind of took something from each industry and built my own style, but I call it ‘skurban’—skate/urban” [laughs]. Photo: @clancycoop
“I like to produce music,” says Onza Winston. “I have a digital album that came out on Veteran’s Day of last year actually on all platforms, released under Onza Davichi. And that is just my first name along with Davichi which is Korean, which means ‘light that shines over the world.’ And my first name is an extinct puma cougar.” Photo: @clancycoop
“There is a wide variety of different songs I’ve produced,” says Onza Winston. “Sometimes it is electronic, sometimes it is more hip hop, sometimes it is more R&B or trip hop. I feel like, over the years, all the music I have made is a piece of experiences I have had. Rather than hearing the music, I want people to envision what that word means along with that music. I want you to focus in on it.” Photo: @clancycoop
“I was just reading up on it recently, and it looks like the athletic wear is definitely hitting the mainstream overall,” says Onza Winston. “It is actually the biggest industry in the fashion world right now. It is at like 150 billion. Street wear is half of that right now. I think the ’90s track jackets and stuff like that might be coming back.” Photo: @clancycoop
“I like prints,” says Onza Winston. “If you look at all the big labels like Dolce & Gabbana (they’ve always been my favorite) year after year, they have at least one pattern that they push yearly. Either that or a color. Floral print, aztec print, asiago print—there is always some type of print or whatever. Some people think it is too busy, but I don’t necessarily think that, because you have one focal point on your outfit and the rest be super simple and clean.” Photo: @clancycoop
“I like hats,” says Onza Winston. “I dunno, I work for a headwear company so I’m able to influence that a little bit, plus they look cool. It is cold out, so it’s usually either 5 panels or snapbacks. I got tons of beanies, so I usually match up beanies with whatever I’m wearing that day.” Photo: @clancycoop
Onza Winston spent a significant time in the armed forces. “I deployed twice to Iraq—2008 and 2009,” says Winston. “I worked the first two years in an infantry unit. The last couple years I worked at the headquarters of the Marine Corps.” Photo: @clancycoop
When asked about how many shoes he owns, Winston says, “Probably like fifty pairs right now—fifty to sixty hats. I have a ton of clothes. I worked retail, so I accumulated a lot of stuff over time. I work for an apparel company.” Photo: @clancycoop
