Growing up in a private school with a dress code, Ian never had much freedom to wear what he wanted. He quickly discovered the importance of good quality and a good fit, which still play a vital role behind the brand and wear of his clothes, and is something he incorporates into merchandise at The Stockist. “I’m always trying to find stuff that’s made better,” he says. This is especially important when it comes to purchasing a pair of jeans for Ian. “I have two to three pairs of jeans in all stages of wear. They can last as long as you let them,” he says.

Every month, SLUG Style features a distinct and unique member of the community and asks them why they do what they do. Exploring more than just clothing, SLUG Style is an attempt to feature the people who give Salt Lake City flavor through personality and panache.

Besides quality, comfort is also an important factor in Ian’s wardrobe. “For the most part, I am a pretty quiet, easygoing guy. I don’t really have too many reasons or occasions to be in a suit and tie, which gives me a lot of freedom to be comfortable,” says Ian.

On occasion, Ian can also be spotted with a messenger bag to tote around a book, extra layers and whatever else he might need for the day as he heads to work on foot, giving him plenty of opportunity to people-watch on the way. “You can really tell a lot from people by how they choose to present themselves. It’s what you’re doing when you get dressed in the morning, whether you are really going for it and trying to make a statement, whether you’re a little toned back, whether it’s not even a thing you think about—you can tell,” he says. “You can kind of get to know someone just through that. It is a great way to make a first impression.”
On nights out, Ian finds that his style doesn’t change much. “I try to always dress in a way that is dressed up and dressed down at the same time,” says Ian. “If you’re dressed well, you don’t have to worry about where you end up at the end of the day.”

Borrowing from this idea and the uniform of his private school days, Ian usually opts for a blue oxford, neutral tee and pair of jeans when he wants to stay in. He spends his time drinking tea, flipping through books and magazines, and relaxing with his dog, Earl.
When it comes to accessories, Ian would rather stick with the function and utility of a simple, great outfit. “Men’s accessories are really rad, but it’s not something I put much effort into,” Ian says. About the only accessory he chooses to wear are a trendy pair of eyeglasses.
One of the newer items to fill the shelves over at The Stockist, and a growing collection in Ian’s personal closet, are an array of leather boots. Investing in a few pairs of high-quality boots has given Ian several on-trend footwear options for the season and makes his walk to work a stylish experience.
