Showing up for Racial Justice Public Meeting

SURJ is a national network that encourages white people to act on racial injustices. This is a great chance to become involved in the local chapter and learn more about the organization. For new members, a brief orientation will begin at 6:30 p.m.

Altered: Artists Advocating for Survivors of Domestic Abuse

One in three women in Utah will be victims of domestic abuse sometime during their life. This event benefits Ogden’s YCC Family Crisis Center (facebook.com/yccogden)—a place of refuge for those seeking shelter and safety from violence. An array of artists have created and donated original pieces of art that depict hope and empowerment to decorate the walls of the YCC.  Learn more about the YCC and browse the inspired gallery.

Black Lives Matter Event at the U

“Prejudice is a burden that confuses the past, threatens the future, and renders the present inaccesible.” –Maya Angelou

If you would like to stand in solidarity, wear black and show up outside the U Student Union for a demonstration. A discussion will follow in the Ballroom East and all proceeds will be donated to the National Police Accountability Project.

We Gender: And So Can You!

Salt Lake’s current Miss City Weekly, Janice Janice Janice, will be showcasing performance art that expresses gender through drag and modern dance. Gender can be a difficult topic to talk about, but it is vital that we do so—especially through different mediums such as dance. Bring an open mind and heart for this celebration of breaking down binaries.

Discussion on Cultural Appropriation

Whether you’re already well versed on this topic or you’re just beginning to figure out what the term means, this is an opportunity to further your knowledge on cultural appropriation. Look forward to an esteemed panel discussion followed by audience questions. This event is presented by PANDOS, a non-profit that peacefully advocates for basic human, environmental and Native American rights.

Divinity: A Benefit Show for Planned Parenthood

What better way to crush the patriarchy than with local music? The Divinity Show will feature music from New Shack, First Daze, Deelanz, Micah Willis and Rabbit. All proceeds will go to Planned Parenthood and Summit Sothebys will be matching the amount raised.

LGBTQ Suicide Prevention Conference

If you’re looking for ways to become an LGBTQ+ ally, this is an excellent starting point. With breakout sessions on topics that emphasize making LGBTQ+ suicide prevention a community priority and several keynote speakers, it’s sure to be an enlightening and empowering event. Let’s rally together on this one, SLC!

Town Hall Meeting with Rep. Jason Chaffetz

In case you missed Chaffetz’s cowardly performance at his last town hall meeting, you’ll have a chance to attend another event soon. Though there is no set date for this meeting, Chaffetz’ Provo staff stated that a townhall was being planned for April, in a presently undetermined Provo/Orem location. Please stay tuned for updates on this important community gathering and in the meantime, get working on your protest signs.
