Princess Nokia
Metallic Butterfly
Self-Released
Street: 05.12
Princess Nokia = SZA + Rocky Rivera
Count this among my “to be played all summer” lists, this release from Princess Nokia has won my heart and spoken to the depths of my soul. Formerly known as “Wavy Spice” (as featured on Ratking’s latest release), Princess Nokia has dropped her former moniker in exchange for an identity that encompasses her personality with a deeper connection to her work. In this self-released album, Nokia drops beats with producer OWWWLS and spits mad verse on top to create an eclectic, yet cohesive mix of R&B, hip-hop, and electronic, all infused with Afro, Latino, anime and futuristic elements, with fantasy, T9 and HTML sprinkled on top. “Dragons”, influenced by Game of Thrones, is a great jam to start with, but be prepared to jaw-drop during “Cybiko.”
