Clairo @ The Great Saltair 10.13

Concert

When I first started as an editorial intern at SLUG, Assistant Editor William Hughes told me I live a very charmed life. I dismissed the comment, but I fear I stand corrected because this is the luckiest thing that has ever happened to me. I mean, what could be more fortune-filled than being asked to review Clairo’s Charm Tour stop at The Great Saltair? The bedroom-pop princess is perfectly fit for a show outside of a colossal palace on the beach of a salt lake. Gathered at the Holy Mecca of music, audience members were hanging off the side of the balcony and sprinkled along the lawn gazing up at our quirky queen. Like an indie dream come true, I was opportune enough to be a part of the congregation. The glistening moon had peeked out behind the fairytale clouds, hinting at how enchanted the night would be.

Like any other self-respecting scenester, I adore Clairo. My adolescent memories are glittered with the sound of her early singles. I vividly remember listening to her debut album Immunity the day it was released on a solo summer road trip from Utah to my hometown of Albuquerque, New Mexico. She is the lifeblood of contemporary soft rock and possesses a mellow yet precise vision like no other. Not only is she highly distinguished as an artist, she is also just so damn likable. Clairo is daisies and cherry blossoms, dainty jewelry worn every day, hot green tea with honey and mary-jane Doc Martens. Don’t fret, everybody in the group I had gone to the show with was wearing some variation of the shoe.

When I arrived at the venue, my immediate observation was how pretty the crowd was. Anyone with bangs and a Pib’s Exchange addiction in the Salt Lake Valley had shown up, dressed to impress. The merch also deserves some special attention, as it was particularly cutesy— doe-eyed bunnies on t-shirts and a kitschy pack of enamel pins so that the purchaser could be literally “charmed.”
