An Evening with Ira Glass @ Kingsbury Hall 04.12

An Evening with Ira Glass @ Kingsbury Hall 04.12
By

Glass invited an audience to Kingsbury Hall Saturday night composed of everyone from young college students to older men and women. After a brief introduction from KUER, the lights went dark. The unmistakable soft voice of Glass came over the audience. He joked that because it’s radio, you can’t see anything—“the invisibility of radio,” he called it. … read more

Little Daylight, Terraplane Sun, Flagship @ The Shred Shed 04.15

One of the charming aspects of Salt Lake City is being surrounded by everything that I need at a moment’s notice. Before stopping into the show, I grabbed a few drinks at Wasted Space and had a bite to eat at The Pie Hole—both within earshot of The Shred Shed– a beautiful example of SLC’s cultural geography. As part of the Three of Clubs Tour, Flagship, Little Daylight and Terraplane Sun hit Salt Lake on their way to Vancouver, putting on a show that was engaging throughout the bands’ performances as well as between sets.  … read more

OFF!, NASA Space Universe, Thunderfist @ The Loading Dock 04.16

In 2010, when footage of OFF! first started showing up online, fans of old California hardcore music lost their minds. Was it really possible that Keith Morris was fronting a punk rock super-group that could cram 16 songs into less than 20 minutes? It was possible, and it was actually happening. This was welcome news to fans of hardcore young and old—mostly because it meant that Morris had a reason to tour again, and once he hit the road, there was a solid chance that he’d play your town. … read more

Peelander-Z, Chalk, Problem Daughter @ Urban Lounge 04.10
By

I wake up to Peelander Yellow, Red and Green toting massive amounts of props, instruments and signs onto the stage only to play an extended version of “Check! Check! Check! Yeah!” and ask the audience, “Are you ready!?” to which the audience enthusiastically replies, “Yes!” only to be crushed with, “Good, we need two more minutes!” What can only be intro music to the insanity that’s about to unfold begins to play as three anime characters come running onto the stage yelling in nearly indiscernible Japanese accents: “Salt Lake City, PARTY TIME!!!!” … read more

Beer and Ballet: A Fun Night with Ballet West and Epic Brewing

Beer and Ballet: A Fun Night with Ballet West and...
By

Beer and Ballet, a fundraiser for Ballet West, was a magnificent event. Guests enjoyed an elegant gala (with beer!) and a preview of “The Rite of Spring.” Epic Brewing co-hosted the evening, providing bottles of a few of their most popular brews. Mingling in the lobby of the beautiful Janet Quinney Lawson Capitol Theatre, delectable bites were served by The Annex, Epic’s gastro-pub located in Sugarhouse, in addition to Epic Brewing’s ales and lagers. I happily used my three drink tickets (and one of my husband’s) on the Spiral Jetty IPA. Food and beer lines moved quickly and service was friendly. … read more

FanX 2014: Smash Bros Heats Up the FanX Game Room
By

Unless you look closely you wouldn’t know that there is a pretty intense scene focused around Super Smash Bros: Melee. These Smashers focus around 1 on 1 combat, perfecting their characters and tactics to bring their opponent to shame. I say shame because the intensity with which they play leaves the opponent disappointed and sad, with the victor exploding from their chair. … read more

FanX 2014: Day One At Salt Lake Comic Con

When 40,000 people descend upon Salt Lake City with the intent of showing off their inner passions you have to know that something incredible is about to happen. April 17 kicked off like Christmas at age 6 when I started my morning by wandering through downtown SLC towards the mecca of nerd, also known as Salt Lake City Comic Con: FanXperience. … read more

FanX 2014: Day One—The Calm Before the Storm

FanX 2014: Day One—The Calm Before the Storm
By

As FanX opened its doors to the many-headed beast of Utah’s geek culture for day one of the three-day event, there was a subdued feeling in the air—not unlike the kind that settles in just before a storm rips through town, leaving nothing but smears of grease paint and empty Mountain Dew cans in its wake. … read more
