Napalm Flesh: Weedeater Interview

This week we have an interview Weedeater’s main man Dave “Dixie” Collins about nearly everything, including the somewhat-still-relevant fact that Dixie shot his big toe off while cleaning his favorite Shotgun in January of 2010. We also have reviews of Brutal Truth Extreme Noise Terror and Saviours, as well as this week’s event rundown and a bunch of links to free (!) streaming music. … read more

Golden Shoulders on 09.19

Golden Shoulders on 09.19
By

Adam Kline, more commonly known by his songwriting and performing name Golden Shoulders, has been writing songs, touring incessantly and recording music with a shockingly diverse line up of players over the last decade. I was pretty excited when SLUG asked me to go to a small house show he would be performing at in the ninth and ninth neighborhood where I live. I mostly was familiar with him because one of my favorite songwriters Joanna Newsom spent some of her formative years singing and contributing keys for the band. The idea of seeing him in a less official, more intimate venue where meeting him would be easy was appealing. … read more

Seeing three great bands on a Tuesday night in an intimate setting is nothing to complain about as a music fan, but each of these bands deserved a larger stage. … read more

Ririe-Woodbury: Polychromatic

Ririe-Woodbury: Polychromatic
By

This weekend marked the beginning of Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company’s 2011-12 season.  Last year’s final show was so colorful and imaginative it seemed reasonable to ask how the company could possibly supersede that prior spectacle. The company’s artistic director, Charlotte Boye-Christensen, was wise enough not to attempt such a feat. Rather, she courageously took the company in the opposite direction. While last night’s show bore the title Polychromatic, the set of pieces performed seemed considerably subdued compared to work produced by Ririe-Woodbury in recent seasons. … read more

Urban Gallery IV @ Neighborhood House 09.24-25

Urban Gallery IV @ Neighborhood House 09.24-25
By

I didn’t go to the Urban Gallery last year, so when I got asked to cover the event this year, all my regrets of good times not had came bubbling to the surface. You see, a few of my friends did go, and they told me all about how much fun it was, how great the art was and how cheap the beer was. What they didn’t tell me about was Neighborhood House. … read more

Skrillex’s Mothership Tour 09.24 @ Saltair

Skrillex’s Mothership Tour 09.24 @ Saltair
By

The Mothership Tour was something I had been looking forward to for months—with its amazing line up how could I not—Skrillex, 12th Planet, Nadastrom and Foreign Beggars. Unfortunately due to complications with their visas, Foreign Beggars were unable to grace Salt Lake City with their presence on Sat. Sept. 24, but even without them the show was astounding. … read more

Travis Rice Signing @ Quiksilver 09.22

Travis Rice Signing @ Quiksilver 09.22
By

It’s always hard being an outnumbered fan. The snowboarding industry caters to the young so well, that I feel like being older than 25 puts me in the senior citizen category. With this idea, you could imagine how sheepish I might feel attending the Travis Rice signing for his new film The Art of Flight at the downtown Gateway Quicksilver shop. … read more

Low, The Moth & The Flame @ Velour 09.23

Low, The Moth & The Flame @ Velour 09.23
By

Velour was packed; I’ve only seen so many people in this venue at one of Velour’s high-energy shows. I guess I shouldn’t have been so surprised at how many people were there––it was Low––but it also seemed like a lot of people were there because locals The Moth & The Flame opened the show. … read more
