"I've been interested in design since I was young," says Beecher. "Since I was a small child, I was collecting rocks and bottles and curating little collections to put in my room. I've got a home video of me getting super excited, at age seven, that I received curtains and a bedspread set from Santa Claus. When every other kid is super stoked about toys, I was like, 'Woo! Curtains!'" Photo: Tyson Call @clancycoop
Andrea Beecher, along with Brian Garrett and Jason Frederick make up M3LD, a design firm and manufacturer of sculptural home decor. Beecher is a living embodiment of the aesthetic of M3LD’s products, usually looking chic in mid-century modern–inspired style. She also helped start the design division at cityhomeCollective, a purveyor of some of Salt Lake City’s most beautiful living spaces.
Every month, SLUG Style features a distinct and unique member of the community and asks them why they do what they do. Exploring more than just clothing, SLUG Style is an attempt to feature the people who give Salt Lake City flavor through personality and panache.

We [M3LD] are very inspired by a lot of the modern era—modern movements, furniture and architecture of the 20th century,” says Beecher. “Brutalism is one of our big, huge inspirations. Also a little bit of mid-century modern—a lot of Bauhaus and that kind of thing.” Photo: Tyson Call @clancycoop
“Obviously, [M3LD’s] tables, the brass and the marble are definitely like a ’70s kind of glam—the end of mid-mod,” says Beecher. “Kind of that [laughs] coke disco era, if you will. We’ve got some gray wall panels that are very Brutalist-inspired. These are definitely more pop art, maybe more referential back to the ’50s and ’60s.” Photo: Tyson Call @clancycoop
“Whenever something is happening in home fashion, usually something similar is happening in personal fashion, which I really think is awesome,” says Beecher. “For me as a designer, I can design a space and make it beautiful—and I love that—but I think an expression of my art is also what I look like every day. So my personal expression is really important to me. I have a lot of fun accessorizing and getting dressed every day.” Photo: Tyson Call @clancycoop

“Brian [Garrett, co-founder of M3LD] and I actually met at By Design, a local furniture store that is no longer around,” says Beecher. “We worked together for five or six years and ever since then, we became best friends and we’ve also geeked out about all the product we thought was missing on the market or product that we thought would be very cool. We have very similar aesthetic interests in design and architecture.” Photo: Tyson Call @clancycoop
“I would definitely say that my style—in terms of design aesthetic—is very masculine,” says Beecher. “Even if it’s a space where it’s light and bright, I would always say that there’s going to be a touch of masculinity to the space. I would say that my aesthetic is also a lot of texture and pattern.” Photo: Tyson Call @clancycoop
“When I was young, my mom used to sew all of my clothes,” says Beecher. “Most kids would’ve thought that was so lame, but I loved it because I would go to the fabric store with my mom and I would pick out the patterns and then we’d pick out the fabric. I felt like I was a little fashion designer.” Photo: Tyson Call @clancycoop
“As a designer, of course I look at a lot of design in magazines and online,” says Beecher. “But I would say I get a lot more inspiration out of fashion. I have way more subscriptions to fashion magazines. I love clothing that’s architectural. I love bold. I love color.” Photo: Tyson Call @clancycoop
